Struggle to pass guard?
Get a passing roadmap that works regardless of how flexible or tricky your opponents guard!
At the 2009 World Championships, Roger Gracie put on an incredible performance. Not only did Roger submit all nine of his opponents, but he used the same pattern of pass, mount, and submit.
In the months after Rogers phenomenal performance, I devoured footage of matches and to understand how he was so successful. Two things caught my eye.
The first thing was his mount control is insane. The way he distributed his weight and broke his opponent’s posture is masterful. I still use the mount principles I saw him apply in those fights to this day.
Secondly, regardless of the guard his opponent played, Roger always ended up in the same passing position. Roger would smash the hips to one side while keeping his opponent’s shoulders flat. From this smashed position, it was relatively easy for him to climb to the mount.
This was Roger’s system; it was a thing of beauty, but it also got me thinking.
You don’t need different passes for each guard…
I’d always thought you needed different ways of passing for each guard. Roger only had one way of passing, but he could enter it from any guard.
It was like an explosion going off in my brain. In an instant, passing went from complicated to incredibly simple.
With the help of my coach, Braulio and training partners, I spent the next year and a half trying to perfect my style of passing.
It all came down to establishing one position. A position I could get from any guard, and once established I know all my opponent’s options.
Before we go any further, I should introduce myself.
How I got good fast… really fast!
My name is Tom Barlow, and I’m considered to be one of the best British-born Jiu Jitsu competitors ever.
What makes this amazing is, I managed this without regular supervision of a Jiu Jitsu instructor.
My training was limited to an hour or two PER MONTH with my instructor, Braulio Estima, and practicing with my students and friends at my Academy.
One of the reasons I have been so successful as a competitor is because I recognised the importance of systems very early in my Jiu Jitsu career.
It’s because of systems (and a good work ethic), that I got my Black Belt in around five and a half years and won numerous Jiu Jitsu competitions, most notably, the No-Gi World Championships as a Black Belt three years in a row (2013/14/15)
A big part of my success was due to the passing system I mentioned earlier. I have always been a top player, so had to pass almost every time I compete. Thankfully, I could rely on my passing system to get the job done.
One simple position you can get from any guard…
Rather than tell you about the passing system, here’s a video that details the concept of the position and how to control it, plus a couple of examples of how to complete it, and how to enter it.
Regardless of your size, when you perform this position correctly, your partner will feel like there’s a tonne of bricks pressuring down on them, and they’ll be almost completely unable to move.
Seriously, I showed this to a 55kg girl, and I think she broke my neck when she did this on me.
The beautiful thing about this position is you can achieve it from almost any guard. It doesn’t matter if they’re playing reverse-de-la-worm-upside-down-tornado guard or a simple spider guard, the wedge is available.
Here’s an example of how you can enter the system from a notoriously tricky guard to pass; the Lasso.
Don’t get me wrong; passing is always challenging, but having a clear guide takes away the confusion and gives you a path to passing.
