Discover The Secrets Of Our World-Class Competition Programme And Take Your Student’s Performance To New Heights With Our Done-for-You Curriculum

Discover the complete curriculum that will elevate your student’s BJJ competition skills and help them succeed on the competition mats.

Have you ever heard a BJJ competitor come off the mats and say something like, “I just couldn’t get into my game…” or “I normally do so well in rolling…” or the old favourite, “They felt so strong, I just couldn’t do anything…”

The simple reason why you hear things like this is that there’s a BIG difference between rolling in the gym and what happens on the competition mats.

However, the gap between being effective in the gym and on the competition mats can be bridged with a well-structured, effective competition class.

Competition training is why you see the same gym’s students standing topping the podium constantly.

Unfortunately, the only way to develop an effective competition programme was by being part of one for an extended time or through a lot of trial and error. That was until now.

But before we get into that, you might be wondering who we are and why you should listen to us…

Why should you listen to us…

Escapology BJJ is run by Tom Barlow & Chelsea Leah. Tom & Chelsea are seasoned competitors and have fought and trained at the highest level of Jiu Jitsu.

Tom and Chels

Tom is a Black Belt under Braulio Estima and has spent an extended time training with the Mendes Bros at the Art Of Jiu Jitsu. He’s won 3x No Gi World Champion, 2x European Championships, and competed in the ADCC finals and Polaris.

You may have also heard his voice without realising it, as he’s one of the commentators for Polaris.

Chelsea won the worlds as a Brown Belt, medalled at every major Championship as a Black Belt, and competed on Metamoris, Polaris, Fight to Win Pro, and Five Super League. After receiving her black belt from Andre Galvao in 2014, Chelsea trained and taught at the Art of Jiu Jitsu under the Mendes Bros for the next few years.

Due to our successful competition records and (arguably more importantly) our reputation as excellent teachers, we’re are highly sort after to teach seminars.

After many requests, we’ve decided to release the curriculums we’ve used to grow our academy and build an incredibly successful competition team.

Introducing The Comp Class Curriculum

The Comp Class Curriculum results from years spent training in high-performance environments such as ATOS, The Art Of Jiu Jitsu, and Gracie Barra, AND a lot of testing and refining with our competition team.

It is designed to work for BJJ practitioners of all levels, whether they’ve competed for decades or never before.

As with all our curriculums, it is incredibly user-friendly and adaptable, so it can be added to your schedule whether you have one or multiple comp classes a week or whether you have an established comp class or looking to start one.

After numerous rounds of testing, we settled on an 8-week programme designed to introduce and reinforce key competition strategies. Here’s an outline of the 8 weeks:

Week 1 – Positional Hierarchy & Retention
Week 2 – Developing An Aggressive Guard
Week 3 – Half Guard
Week 4 – Closed Guard
Week 5 – Guard Passing
Week 6 – Start Of Match (Takedowns)
Week 7 – Start Of Match (Pulling)
Week 8 – Back Attacks

Each of those weeks is split into three lessons, and each class is divided into specific sections that can be adjusted based on the needs of your students.

As you might be able to guess, the idea is to start the curriculum and have all your students compete after the eighth week. From there, you can repeat the curriculum or expand on specific topics based on your class.

The Curriculum also takes into account variations in intensity and energy students will have throughout the camp.

Check out the video below to help you understand what this looks like in real life:

To make it as easy as possible for you to follow along with the curriculum and teach it to your students, each video is split into six sections…

Section 1 introduces the lesson, its goals, and how it relates to the overall structure of the curriculum.

Section 2 covers classroom learning. These are topics you can discuss with your class that will help your students perform better on the competition mats. This includes things like strategy, optimising performance, weight classes, and more.

Section 3 covers the warm-up for the class. The warm-up is essential for the class as it prepares your student’s body and mind for what’s about to come. They’re also specific to each class and designed to build good habits and skills.

Section 4 focuses on developmental drills designed to work a specific area of Jiu Jitsu and master the key battles that happen on the competition mats.

Section 5 covers the sparring portion of the class and how to adapt it to your class. The sparring varies from class to class and works different energy systems over the course of the curriculum, so no matter if your students are in a fast-paced battle or a drawn-out technical exchange, they’ll be ready.

Section 6 outlines some low-impact but high-intensity drills you can add to the session to improve your students sports specific cardio and mental toughness.

Adaptable Lesson Plans

Each video is accompanied by a lesson plan. These lesson plans can be adapted whether you have one or multiple comp classes a week and depending on the length of your sessions. The lesson plans are also broken down into sections to make them easy to follow.

Section 1 covers the goals of the class and the safety precautions to be taken by the instructor.

Section 2 outlines the techniques to be taught and some optional techniques to disguise repetition.

Section 3 contains an approximate timeline of the class so you know what to teach and when.

To give you an idea of what a lesson plan looks like and how it can be used, check out the sample lesson plan below:

These are all contained within the Comp Class Curriculum eBook. This eBook also covers a tonne of other information essential to getting ready for a comp.

As you can see, a huge amount is included in the Comp Class Curriculum. However, we wanted to ensure you have everything necessary to run a successful competition programme and have your students step onto the mats with the skills, confidence, and cardio to succeed.

We’ve Added A Few Bonuses…

Bonus 1 – Sparring Methodology

In this video, Tom and Chelsea break down a variety of the sparring methods they use within their competition classes. Each method has specific goals and can be adapted to the number of people within your classes.

Bonus 2 – Competition Class Breakdowns

Along with the Curriculum, you’ll get to look inside some of Tom & Chelsea’s competition classes and see how they’re structured and how they coach their students to succeed. These breakdowns are about as close as you can get to being part of a comp class at Escapology without actually being there.

Bonus 3 – Understanding The Positional Hierarchy

The positional hierarchy is a simple concept, but it can be hugely impactful in helping your students understand Jiu Jitsu and their goals in any position. This framework can help your students understand what to do next, even if this is their first time in that position. That is crucial during the chaos of a competitive match.

Bonus 4 – 2+ Hours Of Supporting Instructionals

BacK Control Drills // Mini Instructional
