Get The Beginners BJJ Curriculum Now…
Looking for structured, effective way to teach beginner’s BJJ classes? The Beginner’s BJJ Curriculum is for you!
Are you looking to start a beginners programme? Maybe you already have a beginners programme, but you don’t know what to teach or want some fresh ideas?
If the answer is yes to any of those questions read on…
Beginner students are the life blood of any Jiu Jitsu school. They are your next instructor, the future champion, soon to be friends, and the income necessary to keep the doors of your academy open.
As such, you want to provide them with a positive training experience that will introduce them the sport we love and keep them coming back for more.
Too often, beginners are thrown to the sharks!
Far too often, beginners are thrown to the sharks. Many academies don’t have dedicated beginners classes— or if they do, the classes are attended by a mixture of beginners and higher grade students looking for a little extra training.
Think back to the first time you tried Jiu Jitsu. If you’re anything like me, you probably felt a mixture of excitement, anticipation, and fear. This is how most people feel when the come to their first BJJ class.
Starting Jiu Jitsu can be a very intimidating experience!
If you want that person to continue training, you need to create an environment in which they feel comfortable and confident. For most beginners, that is an environment that is full of other people just starting out.
Beginner’s Are The Life Blood Of Your Academy
The simplest and easiest way to do this is by creating a dedicated beginner’s programme. From a new students perspective, this means that they’ll be training with people who are a similar skill level and that they’ll be taught appropriate techniques. It also means they’re not going to eaten alive by a mat master looking to practice the latest technique they’ve seen on YouTube.
We’ve done the hard work for you
The problem is that a lot of instructors simply don’t have time or don’t know how to create a beginner’s programme. The time thing is such a problem for instructors, especially instructors who are also business owners!
We know. It took us 3 and a half months to create a curriculum that can be used by anyone. That’s two of us with decades of combined experience consistently working to iron out the kinks in the programme.
It’s no wonder individual business owner/instructor often don’t have the time or the energy to invest in that kind of experimentation. That’s why we ended up working so hard to produce this programme for other instructors.
Instantly plugged into any academy…
We’ve done the hard work for you and created a curriculum that can be instantly plugged into any academy to create a world class beginners programme.
Before we get into the nuts and bolts of the beginner’s curriculum and how it’ll benefit you, you might be wondering who we are and why you should listen to us.
Why should you listen to us?
Escapology BJJ is run by Tom Barlow & Chelsea Leah. Both of us are seasoned competitors and have fought at the highest level of Jiu Jitsu.
Tom is a 3x No Gi World Champion, European Champion, ADCC Finalist, and Polaris veteran. You may have also heard his voice without realising it, as he’s one of the commentators for Polaris.
Chelsea has won the worlds as Brown belt, medalled at every major championship as a Black Belt, and competed on Metamoris, Polaris, Fight to Win Pro, and Five Super League.
Due to our successful competition records and (arguably more importantly) our reputation as excellent teachers, we are highly sort after to teach seminars.
Whenever we teach a seminar, we are asked about curriculums and whether they’re beneficial— and it’s usually time-crunched instructors/gym owners asking us. The second question is usually whether we have any available.
Our answer to the first question is always YES, curriculums are essential— and until recently, our answer to the second was unfortunately no, we don’t have them available.
Over 150 Students In Under A Year
Long story short, after about the hundredth question about our curriculums for beginners, we decided to do something about it and make our curriculum’s available to the world. This is the same curriculum that has helped us grow our Academy to over 150 students in under a year.
We haven’t held anything back— this is literally the curriculum we use to teach our beginners with nothing omitted and no “fat” added.
Introducing the Beginners BJJ Curriculum…
When we decided to make our beginner’s curriculum available, we wanted to create something that can be instantly used by any academy and taught by anyone with a decent foundational understanding of BJJ. I’m pleased to say that we’ve achieved that.
The Beginner’s BJJ Curriculum is a 16 Week Programme designed to take people with no knowledge of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and teach them what BJJ is, and the core concepts they use from day one until they reach their Black Belt.
We began from the theory that to be good at BJJ eventually, people need to start with a general understanding of positional hierarchy, pressure, control, movement, and posture.
16 Week Beginner’s Programme
We settled on a tried and tested 16-week programme designed to introduce and re-establish these concepts through technique and drills over and over again.
Week 1 – Guard Control
Week 2 – Closed Guard pt1
Week 3 – Closed Guard pt2
Week 4 – Collar & Sleeve
Week 5 – De La Riva / Reverse De La Riva Basics
Week 6 – Spider Guard Basics
Week 7 – Butterfly Guard Basics
Week 8 – Half Guard Basics
Week 9 – Back Escapes
Week 10 – Intro To Guard Passing
Week 11 – Mount
Week 12 – Torreando
Week 13 – Knee Slides & Leg Drags
Week 14 – Half Guard Passing
Week 15 – Back Control
Week 16 – Takedowns & Guard Pulls
As you can see, each week is focused on a specific area of Jiu Jitsu. Each week also includes a detailed instructional video and a lesson plan that can be used by anyone to teach a killer class.
The beautiful thing about this curriculum is it doesn’t mater which week a student starts. While each lesson reinforces what we previously covered, it also doesn’t require any previous knowledge of Jiu Jitsu. That means the programme can be run year round, and beginner’s can join at any point, which is great for your academies growth.
Check out the video below to take and see what it looks like in real life:
To help the instructor understand the goals of the lesson and techniques to be taught throughout the week, each video is broken down into three sections.
Each video is into three sections…
Section 1 covers a brief introduction and explains what we’re trying to achieve, how it applies to Jiu Jitsu as a whole, and common errors we see when we teach this particular position.
We also talk about the mistakes instructors commonly make in this section when applicable. Check out an sample concept below:
Section 2 covers some fundamental drills that can accelerate the students understanding of Jiu Jitsu and the particular position that we’re focusing on each week.
We use drills to reinforce good posture and positioning, and to increase the likelihood that students will be able to respond appropriately to situations in live training. Check out a sample drill below:
Section 3 focuses on the techniques to be covered that week, plus some ideas how to teach them. Techniques are usually slower-paced than drills, but they should still be done with real-world reactions from opponents and with some speed and power. Check out a sample technique below:
Adaptable Lesson Plans
Each video is accompanied by a lesson plan. These lesson plans can be adapted whether you have one beginner’s class a week or multiple classes. The lesson plans are also broken down into sections to make them easy to follow.
Section 1 covers the goals of the class and safety precautions to be taken by the instructor.
Section 2 is an outline of the techniques to be taught, and some optional technique to include to disguise repetition.
Section 3 contains an approximate timeline of the class.
To give you an idea of what a lesson plan looks like and how they can be used, check out the sample lesson plan below:
As you can see, there is a huge amount included in the Beginner’s BJJ Curriculum, but we’ve decided to make sure you have everything necessary to run a successful beginner’s programme— so we’ve added in a few bonuses.
We’ve Added A Few Bonuses…
BONUS 1 – Warm Ups.
We’ve seen some really terrible warm-ups— even from some otherwise great instructors. Some instructors spend half the class trying to kill their students before ever teaching a technique, while others don’t do anything and jump right in. Both these approaches are terrible for student preparedness, both mental and physical.
The goal of a warm-up is to prepare the body for class and help reduce the risk of injury not exhaust your students.
In this bonus, you’ll get a video breakdown and cheat sheet covering the the warm-ups we use in our academy to prepare our students mentally and physically for the class ahead.
BONUS 2 – The Perfect Class Structure
In addition to the lesson plans and videos, you’ll also recieve our eBook “The Perfect Class Structure.” This eBook is an in-depth look into how to teach a class so students enjoy it— without stressing or burning yourself out.
We firmly believe that learning to teach is a different skill set than learning BJJ, and we’ve spent years learning and developing pedagogical techniques that are appropriate in a BJJ classroom.
In the eBook you’ll learn the flow of a class from start to finish, different types of sparring, how to deal with problem students professionally, and so much more.
BONUS 3 – Video Breakdown of a Beginner’s Class
Another bonus you’ll get is a breakdown of one of the beginner’s classes at our academy. You’ll notice that it’s not us teaching the class— it’s Ciaran, one of our blue belts. We’ve gone through and discussed all the different pieces of the curriculum in a real-time class so you can see just how easy it is to use.
In fact, once we developed the beginner’s curriculum, we handed off the programme to Ciaran and have allowed him the autonomy to teach and develop the students within the framework with minimal oversight.
Ciaran has great enthusiasm and rapport with the beginners, which is all he needs for success because the curriculum is already laid out— and we know that when these students move into our intermediate and advanced classes, they’ll have the basic knowledge and skills they need to succeed. No more micromanagement, thank goodness!
Don’t Take Our Word For It..
As with any product development it’s important to get feedback. So once we’d completed the first edit of the curriculum, we sent it out to some of our affiliates for testing.
The results we got back were amazing. Here’s what they had to say:
“I have got to say the curriculum is amazing. So easy to follow and will fit straight into any academies current system. Can not wait to implement the beginner’s curriculum next week.
I can tell you spent a long time getting this sorted and it really shows. I am so impressed with it.”
– Ryan L. (Purple Belt)
“These video instructionals are some of the best I’ve seen. It’s great you get the videos and the lessons plans for each week.
The method of instruction is clear, concise, and straight to the point. I’ve had great success learning and teaching these techniques to my students”
– Simon S. (Brown Belt)
