Essentially, the idea is you pour water (aka new students) into the top of the bucket, while water (old students) leaks out through the holes in the bottom of the bucket.
If you want to grow, you need the volume of water coming in to be, greater than volume of the water leaking out.
While that view is a little simplistic, it’s how a lot of academies operate. And unfortunately, it’s unsustainable if you want to impact large numbers of people.
For example, let’s say your attrition rate (leaks) are 7% a month. That might not seem that high and if you’ve only got 100 students it’s only 7 of them leaving per month. But if you have 300 it’s 21 people leaving every month.
So just to maintain three hundred student’s you need to get 21 new members every month. That’s 252 new members a year!
Let that sink in… just to maintain a three hundred person academy you essentially need to recruit the same number of members you currently have each year.
Unfortunately, 7% isn’t fictitious number picked out of thin air. It’s the average attrition rate for martial arts schools in the U.K.
However, if we fixed some of those holes in the bottom of our bucket, magical things start to happen!
