I have never had a real job. All I’ve known since I graduated from Uni in 2002 is teaching martial arts.
That doesn’t mean I was successful right away. Far from it… the first few years, my gym struggled.
My business partners and I were excellent martial artists and great at teaching, but our growth was lacklustre, to say the least.
Every month, it was a struggle to cover our bills, and I regularly didn’t take any money from the gym.
After a few years of grinding along like this, we decided it was time for a change. So we hired a business consultant to come down to give us some guidance.
The first thing this guy did was sit down with us and map out a typical day. Once he’d spoken to all of us, we sat down together and shared the conclusions. It turns out we spent more time drinking tea than working on the essential parts of business, like marketing and scaling.
Honestly, it made me feel like an idiot, but it gave me the kick up the pants I needed. From then on, I started investing tens of thousands in my education and understanding how to make a gym successful.
So when I came to open Escapology with my wife in 2018, we were able to grow to over 150 students in under a year and were taking well over 6 figures.
